Thomas Sullivan collection, 1874-1944.

This collection consists mainly of photographs of the Sullivan and Dillon families. In addition there is correspondence from, among others, Attorney General Oscar E. Carlstrom, U.S. Representative E.E. Denison, and U.S. Senator Charles S. Deneen. There is also a document entitled "Reminiscences of an Old War Veteran and Review of Co. F, 40th Inf--As Told by Thomas Sullivan", photographs of Franklin County Soldiers, and obituaries for Thomas Sullivan, John Farris Short and H. Clay Ing.

Thomas Sullivan was born in Franklin County, Illinois, near Parrish on January 4, 1844. On July 25, 1861, at the age of 17, he enlisted in Company F, 40th Illinois Infantry, at Knob Prairie near Akin, Illinois. He served three years, was wounded in the battle of Shiloh, and was discharged on August 9, 1864, at the rank of sergeant. He taught for 19 years in rural schools in Franklin, Hamilton, and Saline Counties. He served one year as a member of the General Assembly in Springfield, Illinois. H...
